In Paul's bag

Fourteen clubs and a few opinions.

Paul's driver hunt started in his twenties, when he came back to golf and found technology had left him behind. He tested every driver going until he found the one. This is what he plays now.

Woods
Paul's Titleist GT2 fairway wood, 16.5 degrees

Titleist GT2 driver and fairway

A 10° driver and a 16.5° fairway. The scratches on the sole tell you they get used, not polished.

Fairway
Paul's Titleist GT2 fairway wood, 21 degrees

Titleist GT2 fairway, 21°

Fills the gap below the hybrid. Higher and kinder than a long iron, which is the whole point.

Hybrid
Paul's TaylorMade Qi10 Tour Rescue hybrid, 17 degrees

TaylorMade Qi10 Tour Rescue

A 17° hybrid and the one club in the bag that isn't Titleist. It earned its place.

Irons
Paul's Titleist T150 Forged irons

Titleist T150 Forged

A proper players' iron that still forgives the odd thin one. Mostly.

Wedges
Paul's three Titleist Vokey wedges

Titleist Vokey wedges

Three Vokeys for everything inside 100 yards, which is where scores are really made.

Lazrus mallet putter

A big, stable head. Less wobble on the short ones, fewer excuses.

Ball
Three Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls

Callaway Chrome Soft

Soft off the face and easy to spot. As long as it stays out of the gorse.

On the course
Paul's PowaKaddy FW5 GPS electric trolley

Yardages on the handle and a motor doing the carrying. Paul saves his energy for the back nine.

Off the course
Paul's grey FootJoy shoe bag

FootJoy shoe bag

Muddy shoes stay out of the car boot. Everyone at home is happier.

Some kit links may earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you. They're always labelled, and they never change a verdict. How that works.

The one that got away

The best driver Paul ever owned.

A Callaway ERC Fusion, 10 degrees. Three hundred yards with a baby draw, nearly every time. Then it went on the banned list. Paul still talks about it like an old friend, which tells you how much a club that suits you really matters.

To this day, it's the best driver I've ever had.Paul Defty
Passed the test

Panel approved.

Kit that earned Worth it from Paul and the Test Panel after four weeks on the course. Nothing gets on this list just because a brand sent it.

Stop firing at flags. Hit the middle of the green, take your two putts and let your mates find the water. The flag is a suggestion, not an instruction.
